Sabian Press is an art project dedicated to publishing artist books, poetry collections, and other experimental works. On the surface, its mission is simple: to produce thoughtful, well-crafted publications that register creative practice within the framework of academic scholarship.
Yet, as a project in its own right, Sabian Press also functions as a critique of global production and distribution systems. The press deliberately employs the same logistical and tax mechanisms used by large corporations such as Amazon and Walmart—methods that enable high-quality books to be manufactured at low cost abroad and imported to the United States at reduced rates. By navigating legal loopholes and leveraging import advantages—such as continuous bonds instead of single-entry customs bonds, and the use of third-party shipping intermediaries rather than manufacturer-identified carriers—Sabian Press both exposes and counters the economic structures that allow large corporations to dominate the publishing market, enabling the press to remain viable and competitive where many small independent publishers struggle to survive.
